CITY OF GOD, THE
Saint Augustine
No Chapter Titles
"Nearly sixteen centuries ago, the city of Rome was sacked by German barbarian Alaric and his Goths - a blow to the very heart of the glorious empire. Rome had dominated civilization for over a thousand years, yet now this symbol of culture, commerce, and order was brought to her knees, and her citizens stripped of their homes, their belongings, their honor, and often, their very lives.
In the wake of this shattering event, a mystic named Augustine, the bishop of Hippo in North Africa, watched his city swell with refugees fleeing the barbarians in Rome. The empire had been Christian for nearly a century, but now the foundations of their faith were shaken. As the disintegration the empire created more doubt and despair, Augustine began to hear murmurings, blaming Christianity for the disastrous times. How could this happen? Could our old gods have saved us from destruction?
The City of God is Augustine's response, focusing a new light on the actions of men and the events of history in order to draw a clear demarcation between the spiritual City of God and the material City of Man. This theology of history deeply influenced the thought and scholarship of the Middle Ages, ultimately becoming one of the core volumes in Western thought. Augustine's remarkable work does not limit itself to history however. It deals also with creation, the origin of evil, human freedom, divine knowledge of the future, the resurrection of the body, final judgment, happiness, the Incarnation, sin, grace, forgiveness, and more. The sheer scope of the work is impressive, and it is a key to understanding the formation of Western thought, right up to the present day."

FENELON, THE BEST OF
No Chapter Titles
"When an ecclesiastical rival maneuvered to have Fenelon assigned to a parish that was rife with interdenominational conflict, Fenelon became renowned as a peacemaker. King Louis XIV appointed Fenelon to be the tutor to his heir apparent, and Fenelon was ordained an archbishop. But his advancement in the clergy ended when he defended the radical teachings of his contemporary, Madame Jeanne Guyon. Her popular books promoted faith, rather than ritual, as the true route to salvation. Like Madame Guyon, Fenelon sought total abandonment in Christ.
The Best of Fenelon contains three of this prolific author's most famous works: Maxims of the Saints

PILGRIM'S PROGRESS in Modern English
John Bunyan
"The Pilgrim's Progress has been called the greatest allegory ever written. Its appeal sweeps across the scopes of age, intellect, and education. Children read it for the excitement of the story; eager believers are challenged and trained by its invaluable teaching; Bible students and scholars alike read it for its depth of doctrine.
Just as relevant today as it was when John Bunyan wrote it from his cell in prison, The Pilgrim's Progress is the story of every Christian - from the first stirrings of the Holy Spirit beckoning us to follow Christ to our final arrival in the Celestial City of God."

How could one man turn a whole country upside down?
How could he be disciplined to daily read his Bible, have private prayer, meet others for public prayer, and yet not be saved?
Why did he say, "I went to America to convert the Indians; but oh! Who shall convert me?"
What did he read that "strangely warmed his heart" and brought him to Christ?
